Alder by Magweno Alder by Magweno
Alder was one of those commissions where I had the wonderful opportunity to experiment. I came up with a whole new method of making dragon wings as well as sculpting and casting feet cheaply in a slightly flexible resin, so they can resist bumps and knocks better.

He has "mini long pile" fur which was brilliant to work with and I think works really nicely with the scale of the dolls. I will probably use it a lot more in future! I thought the seams might be a problem but as it turns out with some careful sewing and brushing they are nearly invisible.

As with all my dolls he is fully poseable! You can bend any part of him in any direction thanks to a wire "skeleton". The head is sculpted from fimo, the horns and spines from primo and the feet are flexible resin. I attach the fur to these parts with glue - simple as that! It's a glue that's very similar to fabri-tac, except it's the British equivalent.

Alder was tough but fun and I am actually very happy with how true I stayed to the reference - no compromises. c:

I am open for commissions but you will have to wait until approximately April next year. I can jump you to the top of the waiting list if you are willing to pay a small extra fee. If you send me a note with your design I can give you a quote and put you on the waiting list. I DO offer payment plans, where you pay in manageable chunks over a month or two. My prices range between 150-300 + 20 P&P to America.

Thanks for looking!

I've already totally spammed your inbox with how much I love this... Homg... just looking at these pictures gets me all excited again
I love every single bit of him (only crit would be joint less feet)

But other than that there is just so much awesome and amazing detail crammed into such a small space (even though those wings were mentioned at being what... 3 ft... DAMN!)
*flail* I'm gonna wanna take him EVERYWHERE once he gets here! And just, JUST GAHHHHHH!!! So much LOVE

Thank you again for having so much patience for doing this. I'm so pleased to hear that he was a good challenge too :)

I'm working on the jointed feet thing, it's a shame I didn't go for it with Alder but at the time I thought the resin would be flexible enough for that, unfortunately it isn't :(

Yeah the wings are 3ft from wingtip to wingtip - pretty big!

I really hope he gets there okay and that you like him ;-; Thanks for the comment, it's nice having commissioners leave comments on their own pieces, doesn't happen as often as you'd think :)

Hey  all good things come in time, for any artist. Every piece you make is a testament to how much you have learned thus far. In time you'll work out jointed feet, and that will be another skill you can proudly employ. No one is saying that your work is sub-par, just that it would be something nice to see in the near or distant future. When you work it out, and not before. As someone told me recently, good art is like Chilly, you can't rush it or it'll ruin.

3ft is crazy big... it took me a few days to get my head around that; as the feet measurement is not commonly used here (metric is the general rule bar when it comes to sewing).

I can tell you now I already love him... to the point where I think everyone knows ^^; been flashing those glorious photos of him around to show people, even people who aren't artistically inclined. I also already have a spot on my desk set aside for him. As for commissioners not leaving comments that surprises me a little, because I always do it... it may take me a few days to come up with something that doesn't look or sound like I drooled on my keyboard, but I'll always comment. Having said that though I have seen comments on trade art go MIA too... I guess it depends on the person :huggle:

Those wings are spectacular!
I love the detailing on the back of the fore-legs and the scales under his body are amazing too. Must have been very fiddly! XD"

It wasn't too bad, they're glued on so that was straightforward, cutting them the right shape and size was a little tricky though.
