Calla and Towahee by Magweno Calla and Towahee by Magweno
Calla and Towahee the jackalopes
Now available on Etsy

Calla the jackalope is quite shy, as most jackalopes are. She likes to run, but she also likes to find sunny spots and sleep. Those are definitely her two favourite things. She sleeps belly up to best soak up the sun, and often just stares at the clouds, dreaming in blue.

Jackalopes are very good at mimicking any sound, especially human voices. They evolved to originally do this to evade pursuers, but it has its uses in other everyday situations. Calla is a house jackalope though, thanks to the compassion of humans she is quite happy to live among us.

Her brother, Towahee, is an enthusiastic and inquisitive young jackalope. He is shy at first, but can become quite bold very quickly when meeting new people. He loves running with Calla, and having his belly rubbed. He is quite a tubby chap, but very happy!

Wild jackalopes can be caught by leaving out a glass of whiskey at night. It leaves them warm and happy which makes them very easy to catch. Towahee isn’t old enough enough to drink but his dad says that the Scottish whiskeys are the best, particularly single malts. I’d like to meet the hunter that leaves out a glass of single malt to catch a mythical creature… I bet he’s fun to be around.

They're same as the head, just varnished a few times with self levelling gloss. Humbrol brand I think

Hello *Magweno :)
This is great work! Do you suppose to have a tutorial on how to attach the fur on?
Or is it the same method that you used on your previous tutorial? Appreciate your reply! Thanks..:)

Sorry, I have no plans on making a tutorial on how to make art dolls with no armature. It is a similar concept- in short, glue!
Best of luck!

They're too darn cute! ;u; Your jackalope designs are probably my favorite yet, to the point that I can't choose which one I like better. I may be leaning toward Towahee because of the color scheme and inquisitive little ears, yet Calla is so sweet. I love both of them!

I'm glad they come across as having completely different personalities yet they are the same cast and pattern. There will be more jackalopes, in fact I finished another last night that has a halloween theme... But he won't be making an appearance until later in the month :D

:( They're not posable, just attached in different positions to give them different personalities. Posable ears would be cool though, it is something I'm looking in to.

Aww, too bad! I could have sworn I read in the description they were, but I must've misread it, haha. I'm sure you'll come up with something though, you figured out the wings too. :3

By the descrpition, I don't know who is Calla and who is Towahee.
But I imagine, for some reason, the white on is Calla and the brown, Towahee XD
I still love your stories and how do you give personalities for your dolls, even they being cast dolls and suppose to
be equal, you can convince me they are different somehow!
Both color combinations are very good. I like the gold antlers.
I specially liked the brown one. The fur you had used for the mane is super good looking and I loved his colors.
Did you already thought on using glass cabochons for the eyes? I like the effect they give. But maybe is your style to sculpt them all XD

You got it right! Calla is named after the calla lillies, and a towhee is a type of brownish bird. :)

I have tried it out before with the couple of dragon dolls I made and I found it difficult to know which size cabochon to order and how to fit them in... I made a very stupid and confusing mould for the dragon heads that didn't really work, and I'm sure there's an easier way of doing it... But also I like my creations to have eyelids so if I just stick glass eyes on it doesn't quite look right to me! Plus, *Santani, ~mooki003 and woodsplitterlee all just use gloss varnish. So when I find the right varnish and get it right... It should look just like glass!

I see!

Hmm, I actually buy clear glass cabochons, then paint them!
I choose the size by the size of my dolls heads usually are. But bought other sizes just in case
some would fit better! Most artists that uses the glass cabochons usually put it over the head, and not under like you did.
There is a lot that makes eyelids too, it is not impossible. There is artists who does. They stick the glass eyes on it and sculpt around it! Is possible XD
I try to make it too, but cold porcelain is bad for details such as eyelids ><
Yes! They make impressive eyes indeed! But isn't just the varnish, the paint job is also amazing. It is a question of finding a varnish that is self leveling.
Clear nail polish has this effect, but is not good for a long time. It starts get matte after some time..
Have you tried to ask them it? I think mooki003 would answer you!

Ohh i couldn't sculpt eyelids onto all the dolls that would take way too long x_x it's on my list of stuff to try but I just haven't got around to yet haha

I have a self leveling varnish called... something... i've forgotten... sorry! it's AMAZING stuff though, after about four coats the eyes really are glassy. i've been using it on the kirins/dragons/gryphons/jackalopes. it's been made for scale models so very hard wearing and glassy. a little toxic though! And only good for use on resin, it melts polymer clays XD

No no no, they are cast too ><

Hahaha XD
Oh that is terrible it melts polymer clays.. =/
But then is a question of trying out more realistic paintings
on the eyes now!

I bought some heat set oil paints for that, have you ever tried them? Genesis heat set oils they're called, people who make reborn dolls use them a lot.

Heat set oil paint! What a good idea! I didn't knew it exists!
It should be very good since the problem with oil paints is exactly the fact it takes loooooong time to dry!
I am curious to see what you will make with those!
And since we are talking about eyes, look at this video, I found it very interesting!

0_0 Those ears are exactly what I'm trying to do with my doll! Her Sculpey ones keep snapping off so fabric seems to be the best option. How did you attach them?

Try making the ears separate from the head or at least put armature inside. If you are using original sculpey, switch to super sculpey; it is stronger.

I use it all the time for fixing bits that break off of my sculpts when I am working on them - I had to reattach about 5 toes on my Randy Boggs fav.me/d6i726q
