Caught a Dragon by Magweno Caught a Dragon by Magweno
A commission for a client on Etsy. He just said he wanted a happy dragon and purple was his favourite colour, so this is what I came up with!

As usual I had masses of fun making this guy, the sculpting was fun and PAINTING has become really fun since I bought some decent paints!

I'm really, super happy with the colour scheme, gold and blue was always one of my favourite combinations when I was young and gold and purple always looks so regal.

I do take commissions! Send me an email for more info

P.S. a lot of people have been expressing concerns that this is a real animal that has been dressed up. it ISN'T it's a DOLL but I'm pretty pleased it looks that convincing haha!

;__; I can't believe I got another DD, it came at such a perfect time too. The first one was for Odette, which was one of my first dolls and I sold for 40! And it was thanks to that DD that my commissions really took off, and I continued making and developing these guys. Now, something like a year or so on, I've got to the stage where I have the most AMAZING support on DA and I can now make and sell these for a living! So DA, I owe it all to you!

Thank you to :iconaydenna: for suggesting it as a DD, and PLEASE check out her gallery, she is the sweetest most lovely person. Thank you also to :iconunicornreality: for featuring it... This is another chapter to my life.

I do take commissions! Send me an email for more info

There is a video of me playing with this doll so you can see the extent of his posability! Follow this link!

Magweno Featured By Owner May 26, 2014  Professional Artisan Crafter
Sculpted fimo onto a wire armature then sewed a body from fake fur around it! In short. :) I have a full length tutorial on my front page that explains the process in depth if you're interested

Oh heya, was it you who sent the email? Australian customs are very particular about all feathers as I'm sure you know. I had a look on the AQIS website and it said that feathers coming in are subject to inspection and if they're found to have any diseases or parasites then they are either processed (with a large fee for you), returned to me or destroyed. Seeing as most of the feathers I buy are from America or China they are already subject to being processed, killing any diseases, so I'm quite confident they would pass the AQIS inspection. However we would still run the risk of you never getting the commission if it was returned or destroyed :/ Here is the appropriate AQIS document: [link]

Further to that I can't use actual eagle feathers as they are almost impossible to get, very expensive and have a lot of legislation around them. I know the falconry center about an hour from me has a few eagles but I've asked before and they hold onto their eagle feathers like they're gold-dust. I haven't checked but I'm pretty sure most eagle feathers are on the CITES list which means I wouldn't be able to trade them cross borders at all. (I could ask again if you're dead-set on eagle feathers but I'd have to charge quite a bit extra if I managed to get some because of the substantial extra work.) In lieu of that I would probably use turkey feathers. Nevertheless they would still have to pass the AQIS inspection, and seeing as I would use feathers from my OWN turkey they haven't been processed to kill any infections other than being saturated with naphthalene for the past few months.

The long and the short of it is that if you're willing to take the risk then we can definitely try! And as I said in my email I have managed to get a fully feathered doll into Australia before, but I don't know if that commissioner was charged a customs fee or not.

I'd be more than happy to take a look at a sketch and give you my thoughts on it :)
