This is Kiwi, a gryphon commissioned by ~ExiledFullCircle!
She's a mixed media art doll, made with fake fur over a wire armature, with sculpted clay head and feet. She was finished back in November but the commission was only completed in late December, hence the small delay in uploading.
Kiwi features large, real feather wings. The feathers are a mix of duck and goose, my own embden Golly donated a lot of feathers to this project They have been dyed, cut and attached to a backing that allows them to bend at the 'wrist'. As demonstrated here, they can achieve a number of poses. The primaries fold under the secondaries quite neatly. This is a more cost effective solution for those looking for a winged doll who can't afford the fully articulated wings, but do want a bit more movement than just a solid wing.
She also has a couple of new features for my work, a posable jaw and hinged front feet.
On one of my earlier gryphons, Damael, he had flexible front legs that allowed a huge range of articulation and felt realistic. But if cost is a factor, hinged front feet may be another option for you. They allow a moderate range of movement, when the front leg is raised the toes will pose relatively more realistically, adding another degree of fun (if you don't mind seeing the hinge).

amazing!! especially the feathers!
Ahhh this one's gorgeous hehe c: I adore the colours
Wow, that is a beautiful doll. The colours on it are gorgeous! I love how well sculpted the face is and the fact that the jaw moves. I can't get over how beautiful this is
So adorable, the wing colors are so eye catching! ^_^
My favorite part has got to be her face. And I love that she has a poseable jaw! I've seen those on other art dolls, and it's awesome that you've started doing them too. It really adds a layer of realism to the doll, I think.
the open & close beak is awesome! You're dolls just keep getting better & better ^_^
Well, she's positively colourful, isn't she? Looks very tropical.
I must say, this is wonderful! How on earth did you get the lower beak to move? I'd greatly benefit from a tutorial.. -wink wink nudge nudge-
I just can't believe how much your work has exploded since I got Iki from you <3 Just mind blowing. Especially this piece. Not just the articulated joints, but the details in the face and wings. So precious!
Lovely articulated wings, it really adds a lot to the pose.
omg so cuutee!!!
the colours are magnificent ! Well done as always!
Heh, I just made a hawk head with a hinged jaw this week too! (I'm not looking forward to making the wings though. >.<)
Hey does it work well? I'd love to see how you did it! I tried a few methods and plumped for this one, with a little bit of wire embedded in the lower beak half, but I wonder if a hinge system might work better.
Ah! It looks great! I tried that out but obviously didn't get the clay tight enough, my jaws ended up just hanging open :/ more work required!
I did it a little backwards this time, normally I make the lower jaw first and sculpt the upper on top so it fits snugly but I ended up doing it the other way around this time which took longer but possibly worked better!
Is it strange to say that my fave thing about this is that the mouth open and closes <3 I also totally adore the color pallete.
Yeah it adds a lot to the dynamics of the character! I'm glad EFC went for it, it was a fun challenge.
I can't take credit for the design though! I just made an art doll of her, I didn't design her ^_^ I think it's a brilliant palette too, though.
Wow, those wings are amazing!
He's so funny !!
What about non-posable dolls?
What about non-posable dolls?
Fabulous gryphon, it looks so realistic. I especially love the head as well.
dat creature. so cute ^^
I really like the colours on this one!
I always adore how you do wings. How real they look and how you put the joints in them so they can be posed.
