It’s been a while since I last made a proper art doll like this. I was actually commissioned to make this piece back in September, but what with frustratingly slow suppliers, changes, edits, re-sewing it and of course life in general it’s taken until now to be finished.
This piece is based on one I made back in 2013, which I called the moth-gryphon. If I were to rename them just now they would be called mothfoxes.. but I think I can come up with something even better than that. I’ll have to think on it!
His torso is about the length of my hand, as is each wing. The wings and his body are wired so he can be posed into a variety of interesting positions. What with the joints being wired, this is more a piece for display and occasional repositioning rather than a toy. I’ve been looking into making more abuse-friendly art dolls, but as the majority of my customers buy to display I figured there isn’t much point changing this system.
(Of course I do offer alternative armatures when it comes to commissions but they each carry their different good/bad points and individual pricing.)
This piece cost £270 + postage. If you would like to commission one please get in touch via email, email@example.com, with the moth or butterfly species you would like me to replicate and I will send you an invoice for the first half. It won’t take six months to make though, that was an exception! Ideally it will be more like one month, but could take up to 10 weeks realistically.
The head is an original polymer clay sculpture, and the feet are resin casts from my Plumpkin dolls. The fur is super-fine quality fake fox, it feels like silk, it’s gorgeous stuff and tricky to get hold of around here. (Commissions aren’t limited to this fur though, I have many to choose from in all sorts of colours!)
Thank you for looking, and please have a look at my shop, magweno.etsy.com for tutorials and collectable bits and pieces. I have tutorial in there on how to make moth wings that might interest you!
