Nela is a commission from . I know she's been really excited about her too so I hope she lives up to expectations!



Certainly a very complex commission, Nela has a finger inbetween each of her primary feathers. She has a goat hair and duck feathers, all of which I dyed myself on my woodburning stove ^_^ She has been airbrushed with acrylics and varnished to make sure the paint doesn't come off.

She has a wire armature, so she is fully posable. I made these dolls from scratch, starting with a wire armature. I sculpt fimo onto the armature, wrap with stuffing then measure and cut a pattern for the fur. I then paint the fimo, glue on any embellishments like scales or feathers, finish the wings and finally paint the eyes. The eyes add life to them for sure, and are the most important part. Her wire armature means she is fully posable, from her head to her feet, also her wings can be bent at the "wrist" and "shoulder".

Nela was complex not because of her armature but because of all the little details. An earring, tail cuffs, her necklace, the way her hair fell, the colours of her wings, the little ridges of fur down her spine... Even the sculpted feathers around her eyes were unique and different to do. Making her tail feather was a certain "eureka" moment! I was originally going to make it from fimo until I realised how I could make it far more realistic using a goose feather.
