Ophies by Magweno Ophies by Magweno
Brand new batch of 10 ophies now available in my Etsy shop!
21 + 3.50 global postage

Ophies Ampheritos are winged serpents that live in Arabia guarding the frankincense groves. The adults are dangerous to humans and can deliver a nasty bite, although they are not venomous. (Thankfully these are just hatchlings!)

If you feel like taking on and training your own Ophae hatchling then check out the new batch available in my Etsy shop. I have just listed the ten pictured above. Which breed will you collect? Draconian, Muroid, Testudine, Alligatoroid, Hognosed or the mysterious and rare Undead?

:bulletblack: They're tiny squigglers measuring about 11" long and half an inch wide, with approximately 5.5" wingspans.
:bulletblack: The bodies have wire inside so they can be wrapped around fingers, wrists, lamps, whatever you like.
:bulletblack: The wings have been made from responsibly sourced chicken feathers from happy, healthy birds.
:bulletblack: Their little heads are resin, cast from an original sculpt, and painted with acrylics.

those feathers are to die for - did you dye them yourself? they are wonderful :) its hard to pic a fav - i think i like the orange feathers best. they look like monarch wings with those black outlines :)

No I get a big mixed bag of them every now and again, some are dyed and some are natural. It works well for the ophies, means all of them are limited edition essentially, but if there's enough interest I can buy a full skin of a certain feather and dye it myself. The oranges are dyed silver laced (white with a black outline) which are easy enough to buy!
I'd love to own a chicken that had silver laced feathers - they are so beautiful!

I adore the long and colorful feathers on these! If I hadn't bought one so close to when these where released, I would have snagged one of these beauties. Cx I have to admit, you're getting better and better at creating these little ophies.

Well you have one of the early ones! Thank you for saying so, I was wondering what people thought of these compared to the original couple of batches. The new feathers make a difference - the first lot were made with feathers I'd had lying around for years!

Yeah! Well when I was looking up 'winged serpents' I found this whole site on mythology and history of Ophies Pteretoi and Ophies Amphiteroti, the Arabian Winged Serpent from the 5th BC, and it just fitted so nicely... ^_^ I'm guessing it's where the dragonology book creature sprang from too. It's an ancient myth that no ones really picked up on in modern fantasy yet

Cool! The name really suits the designs you use, Ophies is cute XD I love the long forgotten myths. I'm going to look those two up now, they sound cool.

I love the simplicity of them; white bodies with the coloured wings and crests, and they way you've posed them looks quite real, like they're shifting around to look at stuff while you're trying to photograph them. They remind me a little of the amphitheres from the Dragonology books too X3

Hey I'm glad you think they look so alive! I didn't notice it until you pointed it out ^_^ I just try and think of a range of poses so it doesn't get boring looking through pics of them.

I don't think they could ever look boring, even if you tried to. But they do look alive, like they're trying to squiggle away to look at something.
