Pheasant Wing Anatomy Video by Magweno Pheasant Wing Anatomy Video by Magweno
A friend of mine whose husband is a gamekeeper was having these pheasants for tea and thought of me while she was plucking them, very kindly sent me the wings. They are really fresh so I thought it a fantastic opportunity to demonstrate how wings open and close in a variety of poses. I know when I was younger drawing wings was a complete nightmare, so I hope this is useful for anyone looking for inspiration or stock footage of bird wings, wing anatomy or natural colours.

They are currently being preserved in a salt, moth ball and cornflour mixture (which I'm told is the right thing to do).

hehe this is so great! I am currently making a ref sheet about dead bird wings too, we had loads of dead seagulls on the colony this year. great minds huh =)

its cool that you got the whole wing, including the tertials (which I think are some of the prettiest feathers on a bird)

Ohh yeah, dead bird wings are really interesting and so useful, wings always stumped me when I was younger. I took photos while I was plucking them of each layer of feathers coming off, maybe I'll upload those too.
I agree, the tertials are often the prettiest! Certainly the softest.

that would be cool! I love feathers, I've been collecting them for years.

If I found more dead birds on the next breeding colony I go to (tomorrow!) would you like some feathers from those guys? The flight feathers of gulls would probably be too big for your dolls but the greater coverts would be the right size to make doll wings... Love your new folding wing design btw!

Yes yes yes yes yes!! Definitely! I tried collecting seabird feathers from the beach but it's so hard to find matching pairs, if you could grab a few for me that would be fantastic, thank you!
I'm glad you like them, they need work and I can't wait to sit down next month and really get the anatomy on them right, along with the mechanism.

yeah there are plenty of feathers blowing around the beach but they are pretty random! If I find any birds I will get you some and will let you know when I get back =)

How many would you like? As many as possible or just ones to make decorative crests or wings or....?

As many as you can be bothered with, random pretty feathers are great too, but pure white are particularly good because they can be dyed. But whatever you feel like grabbing I would be really, really appreciative.

I had a look at him today, there aren't many pure white feathers because he's a juvi and they have subtle mottled grey patterns on all their feathers... I'll get you as many as I can from the wings/tail and you can do whatever with them =) if you look at the dead bird guide I did he's the same as the juvi GBB and there are lots of photos of the wings/tail etc so you can see what you'll be getting.

The only times I felt it was creepy was when I got the parcel and it was heavy, damp and floppy haha, and I thought 'oh my god there is something rotten in here', but they were SO fresh. they didn't even smell at all. and when I eventually plucked all the feathers off and there were two little naked dead wings, that was creepy.

Aww. why did you pluck the feathers off? Though... i suppose having flesh under the feathers... wouldn't have gone well. rofl.

Did you keep the bones?

Well if you cure them with the feathers in then the flesh becomes like cement, so it makes my job a lot easier further down the line if i pluck them now.

I didn't! But it's a great idea. Next time..

Pshyeaah! definitely! They'll be wings for a new doll, maybe not all the feathers on one pair of wings but probably used in several different dolls. :3
