Quetzalcoatl

Description

The quetzalcoatl was a test for my new wing mechanism I’ve been prototyping recently. Instead of making a quick duck wing like I usually do, I decided to go all out and use some feathers I’ve been hoarding for a long time. They are made partly with naturally shed macaw feathers I was sent and have a gorgeous flash of colour in the right light, like they are glowing.

The tail feathers are attached to a pivot and can be fanned. The wings themselves open and close like a real birds wings, with the feathers moving over each other smoothly and realistically. They are operated by holding the first primary near the corverts and either pushing or pulling to open. You can see a 40 second video of them working here.

The body has plastic ball and socket armature running through it so the quetzalcoatl can be bent and positioned infinitely without breaking or wearing out. His head is varnished resin and can withstand knocks and drops. The fur is dense tissavel, beautifully soft and richly coloured, one of my personal favourites.

He measures about 30" from nose to tail tip when fully stretched.
