Undead Crow by Magweno Undead Crow by Magweno

This soft sculpture has a machine stitched body stuffed with steel shot and polyester. His feet are cast resin from an original sculpt, and his wings are cast resin with articulated joints, meaning they can open and close. He has rubber gunge on his wings to make them look and feel realistic, and real crow feathers.

His skull is sculpted from Super Sculpey and painted with acrylics, and has a jointed beak, so it can open and close. In his eyes are two little candles, which glow red in the dark.

This commission measures approximately 6” tall and took 20 days of on and off work to finish.

For information on commissions please email me, hello@magweno.com

You can see this guy being posed in a youtube video here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hxvn-E…

:) I can make another for 180 + P&P without the candles in the eyes. They are about the same size as the jackalopes too.

ah, please tell me what this "rubber gunge" is, and what you used to make articulated joints D: I've been trying to figure something out for ages. I had thought about putting flexible additive in the resin mix I have ( but I figure it might not work with a bendy sillicone mold *shrugs* and layering it ontop of the hard resin when you can't see where the resin is up to in the mold is impossible.. (and will likely make excess resin...'s just complicated))

It's latex rubber, very simple. The cast resin wing bones had holes drilled in them and wire embedded at the joints, then latex covers the wire, as it's stretchy it flexes with the wing. I tried some ball and socket joints but they were more hassle than they're worth for this commission.

I don't think a flexible resin additive would work, they tend to make delicate parts a little more flexy but it's very minimal. It wouldn't have the tear strength to be able to bend back on itself.

It would work in a silicone mould though. 90% of things work in a silicone mould :)

With the layering you would just cast one full part, cut off the part you wanted to be flexible, weigh it and then next time just measure out that weight in resin. If you weigh the cut off part then you have the weight of material you would need for the flexible part too. Straightforward and no waste. Resin doesn't change weight when it's cured.

oh god your layering method makes so much sense.. xD

so the wings hold their position once you bend them?

I'm so grateful for your help! There's a lot to learn (and I'm sure you know that trial and error is expensive on this subject)

Very cool!  Are you using led's or is it glow in the dark?  I've been playing with led's a lot, trying to learn their construction, tough stuff!

Glow in the dark. I've never been a fan of GITD or LEDs, I think it looks kinda tacky :/
