Xylare by Magweno Xylare by Magweno
Xylare was a surprise doll for BeeZee-Art commissioned by DemonsTelMe2BuyCandy. He's been on the list since May under the mysterious 'classmate' description! Xylare was supposed to be a Christmas present but I knew Harrison would crack and he ended up giving Xylare early ;) I love surprise present dolls, they're always so fun :D

Xylare is a particularly special commission for me for a couple of reasons. One is that Whisper has been a good friend of mine for aaaages, back when I was into doing Neopets art! Over the years I've drawn her quite a few fanart pictures of her beautiful characters and most, if not all, of them have been huge landmark progress points for me personally in digital art terms. Xylare the doll was no different! The other reason Xylare is so special is that she's the fist doll to have my new folding wing design! That's right, a few of you have heard whisperings of this and I didn't think I'd get to announce them until Christmas but here we are: I have developed a technique for making wings that open and close like real birds wings. :excited:

If you'd like to see Xylare and her special wings in progress here's a link to Whispers Christmas surprise video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=c1yNyl…

I do take commissions! Send me an email hello@magweno.com for more info
Thanks for looking!

Can I comishion you for just the wings? Because I have most of my dragon done. XD How much? I even got high-powered magnets to attach the wings to the base!
If your too busy can I buy like a blank wing armatures and I'll do all the messy featherin' myself? Because she has some big wings. O_O Hence why I want to make them detachable.

My fluffy bugger, [link]

Hmm I've never done it before but I'd make you a pair of detachable wings for 200. They'd be about a 20" wingspan. You'll have to wait until July/August too as my waiting list is really long. :) Let me know if you want to be added to it.

It's nearly impossible to tell where the felt scales start on this, you did such an amazing job!! I love the full body feather coverage too, so gorgeous!

Are the feathers from a real cockatoo? The wing tips look like one from a cockatoo but the other feathers look like they've came from another bird.

I really like how you can pose it and such. So clever.

Nope, they're duck feathers which I coloured myself. :)

Thank you!

Actually they're beads, the same beads dangling from her front. :) When I bought them I thought they were crystals but they ended up being plastic beads, I was not happy, but they look the part!

The wings really do look spectacular, they're so realistic! I think they work really well with the character too, they certainly give a sort of angelic quality to the dragon. :)

oh incidentally re our conversation about dyeing fur, you can also use chalk pastels and dust the fur with them. it's subtle but it works.

that might be something to try too, the chalk pastels, and thank you so much for the references. I need to look into armatures and how to make a good one I saw somewhere that you said something about a book you read that helped alot.

also I don't mean to be weird or anything but can I show you any art dolls I end up making? :dummy:

jack johnston art dolls [link] his book was in my library and it was great. but it was puppetmaking 101 that helped the most, which is a dvd about casting foam latex puppets [link] It had info about armatures too which was invaluable.

of course! I have a group for art dolls you should submit them to as well :3 :iconposableartdolls:

Thanks, definately looking into the video! Jack Johnston's books are all .... D: really expensive, at least the one I'm dying to get a hold of anyway xD

I'm sorry if I'm so dorky, but it gets me super excited when awesome artists are nice to me :dummy:

I'm going to test out the acrylic dye tonight to see if it will work for me :'D

x3 I under stand your reasons for doing it though, I was watching someone and always wanted to make one so bad but because it's how some people make a living, (like I want to do) they can't just go around giving away their secrets. but I managed to find ONE tutorial on DA that showed me how to make a soft one, your description on your images gives me a vague idea how to do it for posable dolls. I just never knew how to attach the fur to the polymer clay xD

I'm hoping to find one (a book) in the local library, or maybe get my sister to snag something from her school. I've never actually taken a sculpting class so this is all trial and error for me there ^^'

after I started the dying process I realized all I have is a plastic comb so I'm constantly worried about if I should comb it out and how it's doing, but I think the yellow is turning out okay, I think I put too much paint in it though Dx

 <3

That's the one that gets everyone, it's weird, attaching the fur to clay.. It's the question I get asked the most, hands down! I just use glue haha

ohh a comb :S They don't last long in my house... A teasel brush is what you need ^_^
