PPE Explained - Working Safely In A Studio by Magweno
Link to tumblr post

If you have just got into moulding, casting or really just doing any sort of hands on, messy crafts then you should have a quick look at this guide I've written.

Personal Protective Equipment is extremely important in any working environment for your short and long term health. It is a huge subject to delve into, but I have broken it down to the nubs to try and give you a step up and on your way.

I would like to encourage any artists that are writing or have written mouldmaking or crafting tutorials that involve chemicals to include a link to this tutorial just to raise awareness of the health risks and how to deal with them!

And if you have anything to add to it then PLEASE let me know, I am also still learning and it is SUCH an important subject I DON'T want to miss anything out or get things wrong! :)

On a personal note my Mum works offshore on an oil rig and safety ALWAYS comes first. She used to be a cleaner (she works in heli admin now) and handled dangerous chemicals every day, PPE is thrown around like candy out there. The scaffs have masks, gloves, barrier creams, helmets, goggles, boiler suits and other PPE coming out of the wazzoo! Health and safety is so important out there that if you're caught walking down stairs without holding onto the handrail you could lose your job. I'm not sure if the over enthusiastic health and safety culture is just a British thing ('nanny state' anyone?) but it's certainly rubbed off on me! Personal safety is important. It is cool to look like a psychopath with goggles, mask, gloves and disposable boiler suit on!

I'm going to stop tubthumping and leave you with this image of me about to install some rockwool in my studio when we were building it. :D Attractive!

Hot! In all senses of the word. And I've stopped using polymer clay for just this reason.
